Set shipping and tax

Choose where you ship, set flat rates, decide whether Stripe Tax collects for you, and say where order emails go.

Needs Particle · 5 minutes

Before you start

  • Stripe connected on the site, see Connect Stripe. The Store settings card appears only once it is.
  • Know which countries you will ship to and what you charge. nertia offers flat rates; carrier-calculated shipping is not here.

1. Open Store settings

On your site, pick Store. Scroll past the connection card to Store settings. Every field saves together with the Save button at the bottom of the card.

2. Say who ships

Who ships is I ship my own orders for a store that posts its own goods. Printful appears as a choice only on a store with a Printful connection; see Printful fulfilment. Currency is US dollar and cannot be changed yet.

3. Set where you ship and what it costs

Ship to takes two-letter country codes separated by commas, like US, CA. Checkout only offers addresses in those countries.

Shipping rates is a short list, up to five. Each rate has a label the shopper sees and an amount:

Rate labelAmount
Flat rate8.00
Express20.00

Press Add rate for another and Remove to drop one; a store keeps at least one rate. Amounts are dollars with up to two decimals, like 8.00. A free-over threshold (free shipping past a subtotal) is not in the form yet.

A product that needs no address at all is not in the form either; every product ships for now.

4. Decide on tax

Collect tax with Stripe Tax is off by default, and the card says so: You are not collecting sales tax. Switch it on and Stripe works out the tax for each order on your Stripe account and adds it at checkout. Stripe Tax is a Stripe product with its own fee and its own setup in your Stripe dashboard (your registrations, your product tax codes). nertia gives no tax advice.

5. Promo codes and the order email

Allow promo codes adds a code field to checkout. The codes themselves are made in your Stripe dashboard under Coupons; nertia only lets the shopper enter one.

Order email is where nertia sends a note for every paid order, with the lines and the ship-to address. It starts as your account email. Press Save. A toast confirms Store settings saved.

Done

Shipping, tax, promo codes and the order email are set. Next: test a checkout.

Problems

  • "Enter each shipping rate as an amount like 8.00." One rate has letters, a currency sign or more than two decimals in its amount.
  • Checkout says "We do not ship to that country yet." The shopper's country is not in Ship to. Add the code and save.
  • I changed a rate and the cart still shows the old one. The cart re-prices on checkout, not on view. Reload the cart page.
